Gen Z is the newest generation to be named and were born between 1995 and 2015. They are currently between 4-24 years old.
Today I’m thinking about the future and it got me worried. As a part of Generation Z (Gen Z) the future is uncertain for us. By 2020, it is estimated that we will occupy 20% of workplace, and reach 2.56 billion individuals globally. There are limited literatures on Gen Z. Even if there are, they are mostly in western countries.
How about Indonesia? Well, I actually found a reliable journal titled Understanding Indonesia’s Generation by Diena Dwidienawati and Dyah Gandasari. I would like to express my thought regarding their research findings, a bit of warning I might not has data to back me up, this is my personal opinion that hopefully would bring new add-ons towards their research.
The findings of this research regarding Gen Z in Indonesia is that Gen Z is realistic and needs security and stability. Money is an important motivation; therefore, Gen Z are willing to work hard and being relocated for a good job opportunity. Gen Z prefers face-to-face communication with their boss. They are also global citizens who are socially responsible.
I agree with all those, I think that since we grew up during economic crisis in 1998, we had firsthand experience on what economic crisis could do to you, maybe some of us lost our house. A friend of mine had to relocate with her family to Yogyakarta from Jakarta because her father’s car showroom were destroyed during riots. This made us prioritise financial security.

What I want to share today regarding uncertainty of owning a house, it’s no secret that value of land keeps rising each year. I want to own a house but the price of buying house nowadays are pretty high that it would take years to pay it even with KPR. I worry of not being able to own a house. I’m still an undergraduate student but I want financial security too, that’s one of the reason why I start investing and saving my money from now. I hope that I would be able to have a good job that pays well and able to support myself financially on my own.
